PlayStation 3 firmware update 2.10 added DivX
support to video playback, which was a turning point
in the PS3 timeline, but Sony outdid themselves with
the recent firmware update 2.20 with subtitles support
for DivX!

To anyone with a huge collection of DivX movies
and subtitles, this is a boon. Just copy the SRT file
with the same name as the AVI file onto the PS3 and
read away, right?
WRONG! It doesn’t work that way!
However, the method to get it working is fairly
simple. A little bit of Googling and I was able to
come up with this:
- Download AVIAddXSubs (direct link).
- Extract it into a folder and run AVIAddXSubs.exe.
- Ensure that the movie AVI file and the subtitles .SRT (or IDX/SUB) are named the same. For eg.: Fake.Movie.R5-Line.XviD.avi and Fake.Movie.R5-Line.XviD.srt.
- Open the movie file into AVIAddXSubs and select an output folder.
- Make the following changes in the ‘Configuration’ tab:
- Character Set: ANSI
- Language Code: English (or whatever language your subtitles are in)
- Font: any legible font. I like Segoe UI, but you can stick to Arial or Lucida.
- Go back to the main tab and click ‘Create Subtitled DivX file’.
That’s it. It doesn’t re-encode the file or
anything, so it wont take more than 15-20 seconds or a
minute if you have a shitty computer.
